Family Day

Since my little clan was created I see family day as every day when my OH isn’t at work and Little Miss doesn’t have school but in some provinces of Canada they have a holiday dedicated to families or communities spending time together, how cool is that!

As we are currently living in Ontario we get to enjoy a long weekend for Family Day as the third Monday of Feb is a national holiday, so it seemed like the perfect excuse to get out of town and explore.

It was a bit of a last minute idea to find a cottage to rent with some friends and given we needed a pet friendly place we had a rather limited selection but were very happy once we arrived at our Kawartha Lakes destination.

Having picked up the husbands on route it was dark by the time both families arrived but what a wonderful view we woke up to on Saturday morning…

The cottage is on the edge of Lake Sturgeon and is currently frozen (even though we have been lucky enough to experience a mild first winter here), so rather than walks around the lake we have been enjoying walks on the lake.

When the cottage owners mentioned others had cleared an area on the edge of the lake to make a rink I thought “pass” but after we all helped the neighbours clear the recent snow from the rink we were keen to join in with fun. As a child I had figure skating lessons and hoped skating would be like riding a bike, once you try again you soon get back into it.

After a short drive to Fenelon Falls to buy supplies for the weekend and some skates we were set.

After a bit of drama Little Miss had her first pair off skates on and was holding onto daddy for dear life, while I looked like a duck on ice as I attempted to get used to a pair of hockey boots.

Six months ago I never would imagined I’d be skating with my daughter on a frozen lake in Canada but here we are and Little Miss has surprised me with her confidence and determination. This morning after breakfast the children (and I!) were keen to get out and skate and it was such a wonderful way to start the day, the sun shining as it popped out from behind the clouds and the children showing no fear as they tried something totally new to them.

Not quite the same level as when I quit lessons as a teen but I can get around a rink

With the knowledge there is a fire pit in the garden my OH and his friend wanted to dig it out from under the snow to build a fire and toast marshmallows for the children…

Gooey toasted marshmallows were a perfectly sweet end to a lovely Sunday before we hunkered down for the night with a movie in front of the fire.

Eternally grateful for my family near and far I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very happy family day to you and yours.
